In late 1984 or early 85, I was a US Army Recruiter stationed in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai. I rented this big 4-bedroom house in Lihue with papaya trees drooping in the backyard. The house gave me a strange feeling the first time I saw it, but I thought nothing of it at first. My family would be arriving in about three weeks. From the very first day I felt like someone or something was watching me while I was taking a bath. Then about 3 days later, two police officers knocked on my bedroom window at around 1:00 AM in the morning. They claimed that my neighbors are complaining of loud music and glaring lights coming from the house. I invited the officers in and showed them my tape cassette player with earphones. This was the only music device at home because my household goods were still enroute from Oahu (Honolulu). The officers were as puzzled as I was but the three of us parted shaking our heads.
After the wife and kids arrived, strange things started to happen. One night after the kids went to bed, all the doors in the house started closing one at a time, as if someone were slamming them angrily. I checked on the kids and they were sould asleep. Then a few days later, my wife called me at work and told me she was hearing things in the middle of the day. She claimed she heard kids voices in the house, even though two of our kids were in school and the other two were watching TV with her. I tried not to act concerned because I did not want to spook my family. That night while we were talking about our experiences, we felt cold air coming under the couch. I thought it was strange because it was like our feet were freezing (and we are on a tropical island).
One day, a Marine Recruiter friend of mine, who is stationed on another island, called and was told that we were not home and to call back around 6:00 PM. He did call around 6:00 PM and said that the maid had given the message and to call back around this time. I said, "What maid? I don't have a maid." He said that the woman who answered the phone sounded like a young woman with Japanese accent, where we went and what time we would be home. Funny thing, I actually took my family for a picnic at the mountains and we came back around 6:00 PM. Although weird things were happening, I did not want to move out because I thought there must be some simple explanation. Also, I thought if I ignore it, maybe it would go away.
Three months later, my father-in-law joined us, and things really got worst. One day we were working in the garage when suddenly, the garage roof sounded like a heavy hammer was pounding it. I immediately checked the top of the garage and saw two huge black birds (who flew away when they saw me). Another day my father-in-law showed me an imprint on my car's windshield. Looking closer, it looked like an infant child had walked all over the windshield. We laughed it off but we were really spooked. Once a month, I am required to make a trip to Honolulu (main office), which is about a twenty minute flight by plane. I usually am home the same day but on one trip, I had to remain overnight to attend a meeting the next morning. That night, my wife telephoned my that her father had a heart attack and was in the hospital in critical condition. Arriving home the next day, I was relieved to find out that my father-in-law only suffered a minor stroke. A few days later he was released from the hospital, but he refused to be left alone in the house.
He claimed that as he was watching TV, a dark figure went to his room, where one of my sons was sleeping. He thought that I had come home early through the back door and was checking on my son. As he turned to watch the television again, the screen went dark. He tried changing channels but still nothing. The TV was on but no picture. He manually turned off the TV but it would not go off. He said he was so scared and confused that he started calling for my wife because he was trembling with fear. He bolted to his room thinking I was in there... only to see a dark figure floating in the air hovering above my sleeping son. He screamed and then felt as if an elephant hit him (heart attack). Several days later, I sent him to live in Los Angeles with his friend.
I guess you can call me stupic or stubborn headed. As I mentioned, I was an Army Recruiter but previously trained as a combat soldier, but we were never trained to deal with this kind of situation. I decided I would deal with whatever it was. Talking with the owner of the house, even the owner agreed that the house seemed to be haunted. It was quite for a while and then it started again. One night, my son came running from his room, crying and saying that god was mad at him. He had a small statue of Jesus in his room, about 12 inches high, that he bought in San Jose, California. My son thought the statue has snarled at him. Then sometime later, my two older daughters tole me that something were scaring them, but they could not really explain... so I did not force the issue. However, they were now afraid to sleep in their room, and now all the kids slept in our room. One rainy night, I was awakened by what it sounded like my bedroom door being pushed open. I actually saw the door handles turn and the whole room started shaking. My little desk light turned on and off. My wife was paralyzed with fear and could not move a muscle. I retrieved my knife that I kept close by and headed for the door. I wanted to confront whomever was on the otherside of the door. I grabbed ahold of the door handle, turned it and it would not turn. I pulled on the door but it would not open. I pushed on it and pulled again... and the door opened. There was no one there. Soon after, I sent my family to California.
I decided to ask the locals for help but they refused to come near the house. Eventually I ran into an old man who knew about the house and told me that the house was built on an old Hawaiian burial ground. I remained in the house for another six months trying to deal with the hauntings, but in the end, I was so exhausted and I quit trying to be a brave soldier. I moved to the other side of the island. The hauntings started again at this other house. I thought, "Here we go again. It followed me here from the old house." It did not last long, for it stopped completely. I learned that the old house was rented by USA Today. I drove by and saw a boy playing in the driveway. However, my understanding is that there are no children living there. I firmly believe that these hauntings was only meant to scare but not harm me or my family.
