I'm a great believer in smoke detectors. In fact, I have 3 of them in my rather small mobile home. The one that I keep over my back door has always been the first of the three to react to any change in the atmosphere. It always goes off when I use my oven, which I suppose is one reason why I like to microwave so much!

I've become accustomed to its shrill (and unnecessary) beeps when there was actually no emergency. It's one of those things you just shrug off and ignore until it stops on its own.

Last Friday (May 18), that same smoke detector started going off - as usual - but this time, the oven wasn't being used. It went off several more times to the point where I finally removed it from its normal resting spot and slid it under my bed (figuring that whatever was setting it off surely wouldn't cause such a reaction there).

Well, I was wrong. I'm not sure just how many times I had to reach under the bed and push the reset button. It stayed active through all of Saturday as well. Mean while, both of the other detectors were unaffected by whatever unseen force was causing the "pesky" one to be so persistent. Finally, on Sunday afternoon, I had had enough of the bothersome, unpleasant ruckus, and removed the battery. At last... peace and quiet.

This morning, Tuesday, I went about my normal morning routine which most often includes putting two pieces of bread in my toaster and then heading for the bathroom. After a few minutes, I could hear the other two smoke detectors blaring through the living room. I stepped out of the bathroom to find the trailer filled with white smoke, and one of the (paper thin) pieces of toast burning; shooting 6 inch green and orange flames through the top of the toaster. I rushed to the kitchen and blew out the flames. The smoke detectors were active for several more minutes as I opened all doors and windows and ran all of the fans. Finally, the smoke level decreased enough to allow the detectors to quiet down.

I naturally considered the odd "premonition" of the smoke detector that I had rendered impotent a couple of days earlier. I very humbly observed: "So that's why that crazy smoke detector was acting so weird all weekend. "Someone" was trying to warn me about the toaster fire. THAT'S why it went off again last night."

More than 24 hours after I had removed the battery. That particular smoke detector normally resides above the back door, right along side a prayer card with the image of Christ.

"For He shall give His angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. And no terror shall come near thee; neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling."

I'm grateful that that Scriptural promise also covers mobile homes.
