This is a story I have only shared with a few people:
I am now 34 and to this day to tell this story sparks fear. Let me also say that before this I was what you might have call a true skeptic, a proof seeker, only believing what I could see, touch, smell, taste, or feel, and until this occurrence, all was seemingly in order.
The setting:
I was approx. 22 or so, my uncle had died and I had driven to the city (180 miles) to meet with my mother the day before to attend the funeral. We (my girlfriend and I), met her at a "Stratford House Inn" right in the middle of the city, very busy area, lots of traffic, close to the main highway. Everything was very normal, we each took whirlpool baths in the room before retiring. I was working nights so I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep for several hours, my mother went right to sleep as did my girlfriend while I lay awake watching the TV. I finally decided to turn the TV off and try to force sleep knowing I would be up early.
I turned over and looked at the window of the motel room very much awake, curtains covering the window, but still quite bright from all the traffic and other businesses etc. outside. I then turned back over to elude the light. Tossing as usual, rather fed up with not being able to sleep I once again turned over to gaze at the window but when I did, the brightly lit window was gone, it was now black..... until I was able to focus on what was blocking my view, a tall black shape, 6', definitely human-like, no features, long skinny arms, very thin head, very black, standing right at my bed, both arms down at its side moving slightly and fluid-like. Then it raised one of its thin black arms up over the top of me, maybe pointing at something, "I could see digits on the raised hand". I was so scared it took my breath away, I couldn't speak or move. I continued to watch it's arm lower then it dissipated as steam would, revealing the once brightly lit window.
The thing that was so odd was when I leaped for the light switch, heart pounding out of my chest, there was this calm..... hard to describe, and the only thing I said was "It wasn't bad" or "it wasn't for me", something like that anyway, when the groggy girls awoke . Then the next day my mother told me in conversation that she had this dream that someone was tapping her on the shoulder all night trying to wake her, she said it was so annoying and she did remember which shoulder it was..... and it would have been the one closest to the "thing". I didn't tell her of this experience until much later.
This thing whatever it was was REAL, and I have really never voiced this to anyone. Can you give me an explanation or an idea of what, why, or who?

Sometimes a rude awakening is an experience to behold. Who, what and why is not a bad question to ask. The only coincidence there was that you're a skeptic. That black figure was a local entity just trying to get your attention to something that you could not do anything about. He will be doing that for a while to a selected overniter in the area. That's the reason that you felt the calmness once you got your resources together.
