Plato described Atlantis as being the most advanced civilization during its time. However, Plato never saw Atlantis firsthand, instead, he recalled accounts passed on to him by others who had either heard of the existence of such a place, or had visited Atlantis, themselves. Atlantis had been destroyed prior to Plato's birth.
Before the total destruction of Atlantis occurred, it was part of a main continent separated only by a small body of water. The total area of Atlantis was larger than Arizona but smaller than California. Atlantis was already at the height of its civilization and technology before the Romans and the Eygptians. The population numbered around 50,000 to 60,000. There were no central government, monarch or warefare amongst themselves or with outside civilizations. Instead, selected elders from each village or city governed their respective areas. Men had more than one wife. Atlantis had their own language and alphabets. They used copper, iron and glass. The Atlantians worshipped numerous deities but did not practice any type of sacrificial offerings.
Because of the tropical climate, they grew and cultivated crops for consumption and trade with the outside world. They had sea vessels but none for venturing beyond the horizon. Instead, they relied on the outside world by trading their crafts and food products. Their most frequent visitors were the Eygptians, Romans and Phoenicians.
When the destruction occurred, the whole island sunk beneath the sea, along with all of its inhabitants. There were no survivors. There are remnants of Atlantis buried under ocean silt and is not visible. Atlantis once existed somewhere north of the Equator, in the Tropic of Cancer's climatic zone. The Bimini Road is not a part of Atlantis, this civilization existed after Atlantis was destroyed.
