In the early 1900's, the Turks started expelling all non-Turks from Turkey. They went into Armenian villages and told the people they had 24 hours to leave. My friend's grandmother told the story of burying the family wealth in a clay pot, as she was afraid the Turks would take it from them. She figured they would be able to come back one day and retrieve their family fortune. They lived near the Russian border back then.
The family moved to Jerusalem and eked out a living working hard. The grandmother always bemoaned the loss of their fortune. To this day no one has ever gone back looking for it. Looking at a map prior to the Turks forming their country out of the old Ottoman Empire, all the place names were in Armenian. After 1920, the maps showed Turkish names only. Many villages were razed or destroyed.
This would be an interesting expedition, however, the Turks are very suspicious of anyone walking around with a metal detector.
