You can find a lot of stories about the Jesuits and their quests in the early years and how they differ from their Dominican successors. The Jesuit priest is...a third priest, a third miner/builder, and a third farmer/enforcer. Their ventures lasted less than 80 years but they covered a vast area of the Southwestern part of the U.S. They were expelled by the king of Spain and also were caught by the Indian rebellion.
During the late years of their quests, they managed to bury alot of the gold and silver that they could not take back to Spain. They also closed alot of good mines. These promulgated all the Treasure Hunting stories that we know of today, not knowing that the Jesuits did all the work...hence the name of "Spanish Gold".
There is also information of how they buried their treasures. They were more consistent than the pioneers in burying their loot. The Jesuits kept records and left markers in hopes that one day they might return or survive the Indian slaughters. The records were probably taken a long time ago by treasure hunters, but many of the markers that they left behind still remain today. Stories of buried Spanish Gold are plentiful with alot of the stories exaggerated somewhat to entice the reader about the rise and fall of the Jesuit priests...and their treasures.
